Vancouver puts moratorium on marijuana shops until June 2014
Vancouver moratorium

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) –

City officials in Vancouver say they’ve received about 30 inquiries regarding possible locations for marijuana shops, but those shops won’t be opening any time soon after a decision made by the City Council on Monday night.

City councilors unanimously approved a moratorium on applying for a city permit to sell marijuana in Vancouver until June 30, 2014. They want more time to figure out zoning restrictions for the selling of the now-legalized plant.

Under rules created by the Washington Liquor Control Board, Vancouver may have up to six marijuana stores in the city. Seattle would be allowed to have up to 21 marijuana shops, while Spokane and Tacoma could each have six. In all, Washington State will have a maximum of 334 locations selling recreational marijuana.

Washington state voted to legalize recreational pot use in the 2012 election. A similar initiative in Oregon failed.
